until then! the asianalyst, 2018, [email protected] author theasianalyst posted on september 17, 2018 september 17, 2018 categories uncategorized leave a comment on crazy rich asians – the singapore household income edition (part 2) crazy rich asians – the singapore household income edition (part 1) here i am, writing about income levels in marina bay sands singapore, the setting of the movie crazy rich asians. while my analysis do show some with “comfortable” lifestyles, many are just getting by. the difference between income and wealth before this, i would like to point out something. income is not equal to wealth. this is because one may earn very little but has already accumulated a lot from previous work, or from previous generations. the report noted that a portion of households in the lowest 10% income group own a car (11.4%), employed a maid (11.7%) and lived in private property (7.7%). comparing housing, cars and household support here, we examine whether singaporeans have been able to have more amenities in life. we mostly use official data from the singapore government’s key household income trends (2017) report. we only look at three things that the report covers at this point of time (1) housing, (2) cars, and (3) household support, or helpers/maids. we examine the proportion of singapore residents living in public (hdb) and private housing, as a percentage of total, in the chart below. according to the survey, we have one in five resident households living in private properties. the proportion is slowly rising. at the same time, the percentage of people living in small 1-2 room public housing is climbing as well. in my view, this is partly because of an ageing population – more of the elderly are moving to smaller homes. interestingly, the percentage of households with at least 1 car (chart above) has come down over the past five years (2012 to 2017). this is as singapore moves to a more “car-pooling” structure. or is it because of cars getting too expensive, coes (certificate of entitlement) becoming too high? however, the next chart above is showing that a bigger percentage are getting helpers/maids. this is especially so in the lower income groups… is this a sign of growing wealth, changing times, or simply the need for young/elderly support?
